Safe Schools Hotline
How does the helpline work?
A 24-hour, toll-free number has been assigned for all of West Virginia -- the same number for ALL schools. It can be reached from in-state, and from outside the state. When you call this number, you will be talking to an actual person - not a recording. You will be reminded by this operator not to give any information which might identify you -- this keeps your identity confidential.

Safe and Drug Free Schools
The Raleigh County School System is committed to providing a safe environment for all students and staff. Each year grant monies are received for safe and drug-free schools activities in all educational settings. Programs currently in place include Peer Mediation, Respect and Protect, Character Education, "Here's Looking at You", "Second Step", Student Intervention Teams, and Crisis Prevention and Intervention.

The Student Code of Conduct (Policy 4372) was passed by the West Virginia Legislature and West Virginia Department of Education during the 2004-2005 school term. West Virginia public schools must respond immediately and consistently to incidents of harassment, intimidation, bullying, substance abuse, violence and other Student Code of Conduct violations. Public schools must undertake proactive, preventative approaches to ensure that these standards of conduct are applied in the classroom, on the playground, and at school-sponsored activities. Any form of harassment, intimidation, bullying, substance abuse, violence or other policy violations is unacceptable and must be addressed, not ignored.

Alternative Education Grant
Monies from this grant are utilized to provide after-school and Saturday detention for secondary school students. Some secondary schools use in-school suspension in order to prevent students from receiving out-of-school suspensions. The after-school program at Alternative Education Centers throughout the county at the secondary level assist students who demonstrate the need for additional behavior management. During after-school, in-school, and Saturday detentions, as well at the Alternative Education Centers, students are taught appropriate decision-making and social skills.
