Directors Memo: Welcome Back to School
During the previous school year Raleigh County special education teachers supported a record number of students with exceptionalities. As we prepare for the 2019/20 school year, let me take a moment to celebrate some of the successes you have realized with your continued dedication and excellence.
- RCS special education teachers served over 2000 students with exceptionalities.
- The Special Education population saw an overall increase in Mathematics proficiencies across grade levels.
- Post-graduates are being placed in full-time employment with greater success than ever before.
- Access to Career and Technical Education has increased as a result of teacher supports in the areas of attendance, behavior and course completion.
These are only a few of the indicators of success we collect and measure here in Raleigh County. The students we serve are indeed privileged to have your caring approach to student supports.
The best way to remain at the top our field is to reflect on our practices and refocus on the basics. These basics are rooted in the emphasis we give to our Beginning Of the Year (BOY) routines. Every special education teacher has a unique and professional way of approaching tasks, but the following are the outcomes we all need to hold as our “non-negotiables”.
- Read and understand the IEP and supporting documents, of every student you serve as well as those on your caseload.
- Meet with every teacher serving the students on your caseload to ensure they understand the needs of each student.
- Meet individually with every student on your caseload to begin laying the foundation for a supportive and trusting relationship.
- Establish documentation and communication routines with families and other teachers.
A key fundamental to remember is that each one of you is a case-manager. This title embodies the role of teacher, manager, mentor and advocate.
I wish each of you a successful and fulfilling school year. I will strive to see each of you in your classroom before the end of the first grading period.
